What I Always Keep in My Pantry for Cheap, Easy Family Meals

Keeping a simple, well-stocked pantry has made feeding my family so much easier and more affordable.

I don’t buy anything fancy — just everyday staples that can be turned into meals without much thought. These are the foods I reach for again and again, and they form the base of most of what we eat.

Here’s what I always try to keep on hand.

1. The basics that build most meals

These are the staples I rely on week in, week out:

- Rice

- Pasta

- Flour

- Oats

- Dried beans

- Canned chickpeas

- Tomato passata

These simple ingredients can be turned into so many different meals, and they’re affordable, filling, and easy to store.

Passata in particular is something I always keep stocked. I use it for homemade pizzas, pasta sauces, chilli, lasagne, risotto, and soups — it’s one of the most versatile ingredients in my kitchen.

2. Oils, sauces, and everyday flavours

A few simple extras make all the difference when it comes to flavour:

- Olive oil

- Coconut oil

- Soy sauce

- Vinegar

These help turn basic ingredients into proper meals without needing lots of extra ingredients.

3. Spices that keep meals interesting

I keep a small but useful selection of spices:

- Sea salt and black pepper

- Oregano, paprika

- Turmeric, cumin, curry powder

- Ground ginger, coriander

With just these, you can change the flavour of a meal completely without spending much.

4. Baking and pantry extras

For baking and simple homemade treats, I keep:

  • Sugar

  • Baking powder and baking soda

  • Instant yeast

  • Vanilla and almond extract

  • Chocolate chips

  • Cocoa powder

  • Honey

I also keep oats, dried cranberries, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds for things like granola, muffins, and yoghurt bowls.

5. Simple add-ins and quick meal helpers

These are small things that go a long way:

- Peanut butter (great for toast or quick sauces)

- Noodles

- Sesame seeds (for simple stir-fries and sauces)

They make it easier to pull together quick meals without needing to shop.

What I keep in the fridge and freezer alongside this

My pantry works hand in hand with what I keep chilled or frozen.

In the fridge, I usually have:

- Eggs (one of the most useful and affordable staples — perfect for quick meals, breakfasts, and baking)

- Mustard and Worcestershire sauce

- Cheese, cottage cheese, and yoghurt

- Milk and butter

In the freezer, I rely on:

- Frozen garlic and ginger

- Frozen grated parmesan

- Meat (especially beef mince, which is the base for many of our meals)

- Prepped vegetables, ready to cook

I actually keep fresh vegetables in the fridge quite minimal and tend to chop and freeze them instead. It helps reduce waste and makes cooking quicker day to day.

Keeping a pantry like this isn’t about being perfectly stocked — it’s just about having enough on hand to make simple, filling meals without overthinking it.

With a few basics, you can feed your family well, spend less, and keep your kitchen running smoothly.
