Homemade Peanut Butter (A Simple, Budget-Friendly Kitchen Staple)
Making your own homemade peanut butter might sound like one of those “nice idea” things—but once you try it, it quickly becomes a regular habit.
It’s simple, cost-effective, and made with just one main ingredient. No unnecessary extras, no added fillers—just smooth, rich peanut butter made exactly how you like it.
And if you’re trying to run a more efficient, budget-friendly kitchen, this is one of those small changes that really adds up.
Why Make Your Own Peanut Butter?
There are plenty of jars on the shelves, so why bother making it yourself?
For me, it comes down to a few simple things:
Budget-friendly – buying peanuts in bulk is often cheaper
No additives – no hidden oils, sugars, or preservatives
Customisable – smooth or chunky, salted or unsalted
Always fresh – you make what you need, when you need it
It’s a small kitchen habit that fits perfectly into everyday cooking.
A True Kitchen Basic
Homemade peanut butter is one of those kitchen basics that’s worth knowing.
Just like making a simple sauce or baking your own bread, it gives you:
More control over your ingredients
A better understanding of what you’re eating
A reliable staple you can always fall back on
And once you’ve done it once, you realise how easy it actually is.
Perfect for a Budget-Friendly Kitchen
If you’re trying to keep food costs down without sacrificing quality, this is a great place to start.
Peanuts are affordable and easy to store
You can make larger batches
It reduces reliance on shop-bought versions
It’s a practical way to stretch your grocery budget while still keeping your pantry well stocked.
A Versatile Pantry Staple
Peanut butter isn’t just for toast (although that’s always a win).
It’s a genuinely useful ingredient to have on hand:
Spread on toast or sandwiches
Stirred into porridge or yoghurt
Used in baking
Added to sauces for savoury dishes
Having a jar ready to go makes quick meals and snacks so much easier.
What You Need to Know Before You Start
The process is simple, but there are a couple of helpful things to keep in mind:
It takes a few minutes to blend properly—be patient
The texture changes as you go (crumbly → smooth)
A good blender or food processor makes all the difference
That’s it—no complicated steps, just a bit of time and the right equipment.
How to Store Homemade Peanut Butter
Because it’s made without preservatives, storage matters a little more.
Keep it in an airtight jar
Store at room temperature for short-term use
Refrigerate if you want it to last longer
Give it a stir before using if any natural oils separate—that’s completely normal.
Why It’s Worth Adding to Your Routine
Homemade peanut butter is one of those small kitchen habits that fits perfectly into everyday life.
It’s:
Simple to make
Cost-effective
Versatile
Made from real ingredients
And once it becomes part of your routine, it’s just another way to make cooking feel easier and more in control.
Thoughts
If you’re building a kitchen around simple, reliable basics, this is a great one to include.
It doesn’t take much effort, but it gives you a fresh, versatile staple that works across so many meals.
And like most kitchen basics, once you start making it yourself—you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
This recipe is my youngest child's recipe and is chief Peanut butter maker...
INGREDIENTS
makes approx 345g
3 cups of unsalted roasted peanuts
*optional 1/8 cup of olive oil if you want smoother finish but not necessary
*optional sea salt to taste
METHOD
Place the nuts into a food processor and blitz for roughly 5-6 minutes.
If the peanuts are sticking to the sides - turn off the processor and scrape from the sides using a spatula.
Don't panic it wont stay crumbly - eventually it will turn into smooth peanut butter.
Once it starts to form a butter it is now your choice whether you continue to blitz or to stop - it depends if you want SMOOTH or CRUNCHY peanut butter.
Also add the dash of olive oil if you wish.
Add sea salt to taste if you choose.
Remove from the processor and serve or place it in an airtight container and store in the fridge. It should last for up to 2 weeks, personally it never lasts more than a few days in our house.

Homemade peanutbutter is the best. So easy too.
